One of my favorite topics to discuss is HABITS! I love the idea of learning to do new things that will make me a better woman, mom, friend, sister, and daughter. I geek out on habits and could listen to a podcast every day to hear other people talking about habits they are building. If I have something I want to improve, I don’t wait for a new year, month, or week. I love that I can start something new every single day when I wake up. But, as we are ending a year (and a decade), I am jazzed up more than usual! I tend to not make resolutions and lean instead towards creating habits. I have a much higher success rate when creating very specific habits instead of broad and general New Years Resolutions. Habits can be something we want to STOP doing as well as START doing. My favorite type of habit to build is when I learn to do something I wasn’t doing before. But, if I’m honest with myself, there are habits I need to break and these can be equally or more important than starting something new.
Things I’ve Learned Along the Way
When you Google “How long does it take to build a habit?” you will receive answers anywhere from 18 days to 8.5 months…. That’s a huge discrepancy! But, no matter how long it takes to build the habit, we know we can’t give up and consistency is everything! There are a few things I’ve learned about creating habits that I’d like to share with you.
- Only focus on one to five habits at a time. Five is actually A LOT to work on at one time, but there are the few special people who can do this.
- When you mess up, just start over. But, be sure you start over. Your habit can withstand one mistake, but if you miss your goal twice in a row, you are way more likely to give up. No one is perfect and no one is going to get it right every single day. But, the key is to keep on trying. Every single day you have a chance to start over and you are never a failure as long as you keep getting up and trying again. Over and over and over.
- Pick habits that will bring you joy. If you are trying to do something you hate, you won’t find success. The habit alone might not bring you joy right away, but you can learn to love it by pairing it with something you love until it comes naturally! For example, if you want to drink more water, but really dislike always thinking about drinking, buy yourself a new water bottle that you will love to carry with you!
- Set small goals for yourself when you are getting started and reward yourself often! You deserve it! You are becoming better every day!
